Yesterday was the hottest day this year in St. Louis.
Yep. And we were at the Cardinal game, right in the thick of it.
Lucky for us, we had my cousin's tickets in the Redbird club which kept us shaded and gave us access to an air conditioned area where you could watch the game and dine on various non-baseball type foods. Crab Rangoon? Custom stir fry? Hell yeah. Of course, I couldn't do the ballgame without a hotdog. It's a requirement you know. Even if you aren't hungry, you sort of HAVE to eat one.
It was Rick Ankiel lunchbox day and also the kids could run the bases after the game. We made it to about the sixth inning when Mike and I realized that there was no way Warren could make it to running the bases. He was weepy, had trouble coping with the heat, and was overall rather whiny. Also, at that point, it was about 104 degrees on the field. Yowsers.
But the big issue for me at the ballgame was the young people seated behind us. The guy managed to spill not one, not two, but three relatively full cups of beer. While watching the game he used about every curse word there is, focusing on saying SH&T in every sentence. I remember being 21 (which is the age they were because the girl proceeded to tell the story of her 21st birthday about three times), I know I was into the beer. Lord knows, there are times I still am. (Just ask my family about Sunday on vacation.) However, I hope, (and honestly think I was) I was more aware of my audience when conversing with my friends enjoying a game. We were surrounded by families. Kids everywhere. And it's a Sunday afternoon, not the most important game of the season, and this guy can't pull it together to just relax. It was annoying. And it was once again the kick in the pants that reassures me I AM GETTING OLD!
Oh and did you want to know how long we lasted at the game? Yeah, until the bottom of the ninth inning. We left a whole two minutes before the WINNING GRAND SLAM by Aaron Miles. But of course. (And we passed the line of people to run the bases. They must have started lining up at the 5th inning!)
